On January 16, 2026, The Research Center for Higher Education Division of Global Education (hereinafter referred to as the “International Office”), organized a fieldwork event titled “Let’s Experience International Exchange at a Japanese High School.” This event was part of the Tokushima Prefecture International Student Community Exchange Promotion Project, which aims to foster stronger connections between international students, Japanese students, and local communities. Through activities like this, the project helps international students improve their Japanese language skills, deepen their understanding of Japanese culture, and supports their integration into the local community.
As part of this fieldwork, international and Japanese students from Tokushima University and Naruto University of Education visited Tokushima Municipal High School, where they experienced the school cafeteria, participated in regular classes, and joined various club activities. During the class experience, participants were divided into several groups to attend lessons alongside high school students. In addition, international students introduced their home countries, sparking lively cross-cultural exchanges.
In the afternoon, participants joined one of several club activities—calligraphy, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, Japanese archery, or dance—based on their interests. Through these experiences, they were able to engage with traditional aspects of Japanese culture in a hands-on and meaningful way.
By taking part in this fieldwork, internationl students gained firsthand insight into the unique aspects of Japanese high school life and culture. For Japanese students and high schoolers, the opportunity to interact with international students deepened their understanding of different cultures. The day proved to be an unforgettable experience for all involved. One international student shared, “The high school students were so kind, and we were able to connect right away.” Another commented, “It was truly moving to experience Japanese high school life firsthand.”
The International Office will continue to promote mutual understanding and meaningful exchange among international students, Japanese students, and local communities through initiatives like this one.
